 1.     “Guidelines for the Recruitment of TKU Students into Teacher Education Program” is enacted to fairly and publicly select students at Tamkang University for the Teacher Education Program which aims to develop future teachers for junior high and senior schools, according to the “Regulations of the Establishment of Teacher Education Center in Universities” and “Regulations of Taking Teacher Education Credits for Tamkang University Students”.

2.     Qualification for Application

A.    Undergraduates (sophomore and higher grades) whose 1) majors or minors are the subjects that the Teacher Education Center of Tamkang University has developed, 2) the average academic grade of the previous semester is the top 50% in the entire class or grade, and 3) the moral grade of each semester before application is 80 or above, are allowed to apply for the teacher education program.

B.    Graduate students whose 1) average academic score of the previous semester is 70 or above, and 2) the moral grade of each semester before application is 80 or above, are allowed to apply for the teacher education program.

3.     The number of the enrolled students is decided by the Ministry of Education (MOE). The selection procedure is held in the second semester of each academic year.

4.     Students who are qualified are able to apply for the teacher education program of training junior and senior high school teachers. The procedure of the selection is as the following stages:

A.       First stage: Students’ outstanding performance (e.g. academic performance; high grades of the required course, Service-learning; high moral grades; experiences of class officers; records of social service) will be the first things to be considered. Only students who pass the first stage are allowed to enter the second stage. The number of the enrolled students is decided by MOE each year.

B.        Second stage: The Chair of the teacher education program will call on a committee (The committee for selection of teacher education program students) to evaluate students who have passed the first stage. The following exams will be considered during the evaluation:

I.          Personality Exam: It is to evaluate whether student’s personality is appropriate for being a teacher. There are three levels: appropriate, fine, inappropriate. Only students whose levels are fine or above are considered to pass this exam.

II.        Short Essay: It is to examine whether students have enough ability of language use and logical thinking. The score ranges from 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest). Only students whose scores are 3 or above are considered.

III.      Interview: It is to evaluate student’s ability of expressing ideas orally. The evaluation has three levels: unacceptable, fine, acceptable. Only students whose grade is fine or above are considered to pass this exam.

C.        Final stage: The Chair of the Teacher Education Program will form a committee for selection of teacher education program students. According to the number of enrolled students that the MOE has set, the committee will enroll students who have passed all the previously mentioned exams. Another 20 students will be in the waiting list. The rest of the students who fail the exam will be excluded. If students have the same total scores in exams, the committee will firstly consider their scores of personality exams, and secondly, scores of short essays to make decisions.

5.     The standard scores of the exams for aboriginal students will be 25% lower than others. The number of the enrolled aboriginal students is additional to the number decided by MOE. There can be additional three aboriginal students at most in each class. If their original scores are high enough to pass exams without the need to lower 25% of the standard, the number of their enrollment will not be seen as additional.

6.     The list of the enrollment will be sent to the president after the committee has approved it. Students should register within the limited time. If not, they are seen as giving up the qualification to take the teacher education program. Their places will be replaced by students on the waiting list. The time for the students on the waiting list to register is due before the end of the course registration next semester.

7.     These Guidelines will be conducted after they are approved by the committee and sent to the president. They will also be sent to MOE to confirm. The administrative procedure will be the same if these need to be modified.
